Donald Trump said a lot of silly things when he announced he was running for president back in June. And now, his candidacy speech, which contained line after line of racist and derogatory remarks about Mexican immigrants, is finally coming back to haunt not him, but the U.S. soccer players he hopes to one day represent.
Mexican television network Azteca has spliced together Trump lines like, "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best" and "We don't have victories anymore" to create a very, very good advertisement for the upcoming USA-Mexico soccer match.
Taking Trump's ignorance and slicing his words into a hot take on the state of Mexican and American soccer was a genius move by Azteca. Mexico, it must be noted, routinely produces and sends extraordinary talents, such as former Chicago Fire forward Cuauhtémoc Blanco, to the U.S. to play for Major League Soccer.
Trump can't pretend like he doesn't care about soccer at all either. In early August, a group that he's vested in tried to buy Colombia soccer club Atletico Nacional for $100 million, but ultimately weren't willing to meet the team's $150 million asking price. (The investment group has since moved on to weighing a bid for Argentina's Club Atletico San Lorenzo di Almagro, the New York Post reported in late August.)
Expect to see Trump's words thrown into the face of American soccer fans again and again as we draw closer to the USA-Mexico match at the Rose Bowl on Oct. 10. The winner will claim a spot in the 2017 Confederations Cup.
